Health and Fitness WorldKapha - Earth and Water - Ayurvedic Body TypeAyurvedic Body Type - Kapha = Earth and WaterKapha is the elemental makeup that has the greatest solidity to it, physically and emotionally. It is the dosha of permanence, or slow change. Words used to describe kapha characteristics are heavy, cool, soft, thick, viscous, firm, stable, sweet and slimy. Kapha is heightened in the spring of every year and in youth. It is dominant during early morning and early in the night. During those times, one should try to avoid foods and exercise routines that have kapha traits, so as not to create an excess of water and earth within oneself. Kapha type people tend to exhibit the qualities associated with the elements of that dosha - earth and water. They tend to be somewhat large framed and heavy set. Their skin is thick, cool, pale and oily, and they prefer to live in warm climates. Kaphas tend to be earthy, stable people, with patient nature. They like sharp and pungent foods. Kaphas learn very slowly, but they have a good long-term memory. They don’t get angry easily, but once a kapha is angry, he or she stays that way for a while. Kaphas sleep a lot and tend to be affectionate and emotionally secure. The kapha elements are responsible for maintaining oiliness of the body and organs, general physical stability, virility, strength, immunity and the fluidity of muscular and joint movement. When the kapha elements are out of balance, there are difficulties that arise within these functions, such as dryness or loss of oiliness, edema, emaciation, low immunity and susceptibility to disease, impotence, sterility, lethargy confusion and fatigue. The antidotes for illness stemming from kapha imbalances are things that have the opposite properties - those of fire and air. The recommended diet for people with mainly kapha in their makeup is comprised largely of foods that are light. Kapha types can benefit from vigorous exercise and should fight the inclination to be sedentary.
