Health and Fitness WorldPitta - Fire - Ayurvedic Body TypeAyurvedic Body Type - Pitta = FireThe word pitta, when translated from Sanskrit, means to heat or burn. Fittingly, the characteristics of pitta relate to the qualities of fire. Those inherent characteristics are hot, spicy, sharp, liquid, fluid, sour, slightly oily, pungent, aggressive, yellow and blue. Pitta increases during the late rainy season (Sharad ritu) in all of us. This dosha is at its highest at midday and midnight and is strongest during mid twenties through late fifties. During those times, one should try to avoid foods and exercise regiments with pitta traits so as not to create an excess of fire and water within ourselves. People dominated by the pitta element, fire, manifest physical and behaviour characteristics that resemble them. For example, pittas tend to get hot and sweaty easily. Pink, ruddy cheeks or freckles indicate pitta. They like cool climates, and have strong appetite for spicy, sweet, and bitter foods. Their eyes get red easily. Pittas can be fierce in their anger, and it's easy to get their ire up. They tend to be emotionally intense. Articulate and precise people with strong memories pittas make great entrepreneurs and other sorts of leaders. The pitta element is responsible for our vision, digestion, heat production, metabolism, the colour of our skin, our organs, thirst, body suppleness, and intellectual thought. When pitta is out of balance, there are problems with the above functions manifested as yellowness of eyes, high or low body temperatures, yellow discoloration of body fluids, jaundice of skin and confusion. The antidotes for illnesses stemming from pitta imbalances are people places and things that have the opposite properties. People with a predominantly pitta constitutions should stick to foods that are less spicy in order to help achieve and maintain balance. Moderate aerobic activity, such as walking at a medium to fast pace, is recommended for people with pitta constitutions, although people of all doshas should design a personal exercise regimen that includes a balance of both calming and invigorating movements.
